Fantastic Voyage: Making of

Reflective Statement:

In this project, it has been asked to create a story from an existing phenomenon and produce a 3-minute animation based on it. Although the story was already given, finding an interesting but at the same time, a suitable environment was quite difficult. After I made a decision to set the environment to another planet, it was originally planned to create a completely exotic environment, however, it ended up with a different version of the earth which is one of the flaws of this final outcome. To differentiate the look of the main character mushroom, a unique feature glow was added to it to get more attention on the screen.

Another mistake is obviously weak planning. As can be seen in the storyboard and script, it has some details missing compared to the final result. This problem happened in the previous projects which probably caused by a lack of experience working in a standard procedure. I often find my self improvising ideas for the project without going through every step including fixing the script or adding another cut to the storyboard but making it directly in 3D software. This is also quite related to the time limit since I was working until a few hours before the deadline so time management is something that need to be improved for better outcomes.

Moreover, the animation was required to be about the life cycle of fungi, however, my version of the animation is more about space exploration and fungi do not even appear in more than half of the film. Protagonists often appear in the last part in some films I watched so I was sort of influenced by that, however, still, it would have been much better to include more content about fungi reproduction with more details.

Another thing I would like to improve is the transition between the scenes. In some sequences, the transition is not smooth enough which can be quite distracting for the viewers. The scenes with spores flying in the air could be connected more seamlessly by leaving out one spore in the black screen between each cut and continuing the scene with the same actor.

In terms of the look and style of the film, it was meant to be semi-realistic similar to Pixar animated films and it was originally planned to utilize real-time renderers such as Blender Eevee and Unreal Engine, however, it ended up with a large portion of the film rendered with Arnold and Maya Hardware 2.0 and only a few scenes done in Unreal Engine 4. Considering that I spent too much time getting used to the real-time renderer, it actually came as a disadvantage. Nevertheless, exploring a new method to produce animations was surely a valuable experience and will be useful in the future.

Lastly, the sound design of this film could definitely be better. Since I could not collect a wide range of original sounds under the current circumstance, most of the original sound was loyalty free files from the web which does not have the finest quality. Apart from the quality of the audio, more variations and SFX could be added for more scenes which will make the film less boring and more immersive.

Overall, although I could not fully finish the animation due to the current situation, it was my first animation project that went from scriptwriting to rendering which is groundbreaking. Based on this experience, I now can plan and conduct projects more confidently.
